2.5 million 3-D TVs: Sony’s Expected 2010 Sales

We mentioned a few days back that Sony had announced release dates and price lists for its range of 3-D TVs, they have since stated that they will be able to sell 2.5 million units by the end of the fiscal year. Those figures are very optimistic for such a new piece of technology – the release of Avatar on 3D Blu-ray could certainly help those numbers.

If you thought that the sales projection was a little high – then how about 25 million units. This is the figure that Sony’s TV division head, Yoshihisa Ishida reports that they will sell by the end of the 2011 fiscal year. Information Week reports that Sony expects 1 in 10 TV sales to be a 3D model.

When new consumer electronics products are launched sales are normally slow – but news that a PS3 firmware upgrade will allow 3D gaming has done nothing to hurt sales forecasts. If this does happen, then sales of both Sony 3D TVs and PlayStation 3s will be very healthy.

The evolution of TVs have been slow since the launch of LCD and Plasma, 3D is the biggest upgrade yet and should prove very popular. We just hope that the technology is as good as they say it is.

3D TVs: Don’t Hurry to Buy One

We are now three months in to 2010 and the early showings of 3D TVs that we saw at CES are now coming to the market. Panasonic and Samsung have now released theirs, Sony is to launch their first 3DTV models in June – which we mentioned in a recent post.

So you now have a decision to make – should I buy one? The simple answer would be no, we have a good reason for this – the price is too high and the technology is still in its infant stage. If you are one of those who always want new technology as soon as it is launched – then please, do not let us stop you.

We are not certain how long it will be before the next-generation of 3DTVs are released, it could be a few years down the line. If you do want to get yourself a new 3DTV then take my advice – wait until Black Friday or Christmas as there will be some great deals offered to you.

Google and DISH Set-top Box: Android or Chrome OS?

Google and DISH are working together on a new search feature for its set-top box, there is not much known about the new venture – such as will it run on Android or Chrome OS. WSJ hints that it could be the former – but cannot back it up with evidence.

AppScout picks up on the fact that the news has left us with so many unanswered questions, is it just a search tool to find TV shows and pay-per-view – we do hope that it is much more than that – not sure what that will be though.

TechCrunch pitched the idea of Google featuring on a set-top box way back in 2007 – we wonder how they knew?

It is no secret that the software running a number of these set-top boxes are not that great – Android or Chrome OS will be very welcome by users. Let us hope that there will not be different version of the OS as Google has on their smartphones – it does get confusing.
